Google's latest move in its quest for virtual world domination is called Buzz, and there is, indeed a lot of buzz surrounding the start-up. Unlike the Wave, which thus far has turned out to be much ado about nothing, and required special "invites," Buzz is installed automatically for anyone who already has GMail, and wants Buzz.
While some are touting Buzz as the thing that might finally topple Facebook, many (myself included), really think that's a bit of an exaggeration. LA Times Tech writer Mark Milian calls Buzz, "A Twitter/Facebook Mashup" (Video), which is about accurate. Unfortunately, it seems to have the worst traits of both Facebook and Twitter. It has the random telegraph feel of Twitter, and the lack of privacy of Facebook. The privacy issues are reportedly being addressed.
I do like the ability to incorporate Twitter updates and Google Reader updates into Buzz with ease. I also like the ability to "like" posts - this gives me the ability to tell someone thanks for posting information without having to type out, "Thanks for posting...." (you get the idea). Perhaps, in time, if Google keeps listening to its users, it will be a viable alternative social networking site.
