Google Reader "Play" Challenges Stumbleupon

Posted Tue, March 30, 2010 by Jennifer Pointer

Stumbleupon.com is a popular social news site that allows users to browse web articles and posts suggested by the site.  As the users give "thumbs up" and "thumbs down," the site learns what they like, and the choice of articles becomes more and more customized to each user.

Well, now, Google wants in on that action.  Google has added "Play" to its popular Google Reader.  According to Google:

Google Reader Play a new way to browse interesting stuff on the web. It's super easy to use - after you've read an item, just click the next arrow to move to the next one. Let us know which stuff you enjoy by clicking the "like" button, and we'll use that info to show you more stuff that you'll like.

What kind of stuff do we include in Reader Play?

  • The most popular items on the web
  • Items that several of your friends have shared
  • Other great stuff we think you'll enjoy, based on your Reader Play history

I gave it a try today, under a couple of different ID's.  The initial offerings made sense, considering the items I have shared in Google Reader.  The nice thing about Google Reader Play is that unlike Stumbleupon, it does not require a toolbar download.  You do need to sign into your Google account, however, for it to work.

If you want to give it a try, sign into your Google account (or set one up), and then visit Google Reader Play.  Note that currently-active users of Google Reader will initially have more customized offerings than brand-new account holders.
