Veterans Resources Online

Posted Fri, November 11, 2011 by Jennifer Pointer

On this day set aside to honor U.S. Military Veterans, we would like to thank all of the U.S. Military Veterans and their families for their service to our Country.  The above video is a copy of a tribute a very good late friend of mine, David Jennings (1969-2010) entered in an online video contest.  He was an Army Veteran (10th Mountain Division), and was always very proud of his service to our country, and supportive of other U.S. military personnel and veterans.  The video also has a touch of his wicked sense of humor, and, even though I've watched it numerous times, it always makes me smile.  I hope you enjoy it as well.

I’m also especially proud of my Father, Ralph Pointer, who served in active duty in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, and my late Grandfather, Raymond Green, who served active duty in the Army’s Rainbow Division out of Texas in WWI, in Germany.  My parents have been serving U.S. Military Veterans and their families for many years in their local VFW post.

I figured today is as good a day as any to list a few of the great resources that are available to U.S. Military Veterans and their families.

  • The U.S. Department of Labor has some great resources for those recently discharged from active duty, seeking to re-enter civilian life and the workforce.
  • Military.com has online resources for learning how to convert your military experience on a resume into terms that are recognized in corporate America.
  • The Veterans Administration. has a fantastic compilation of resources for those sufferning from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Veterans families United Foundation and The Purple Star Veterans and Families Coming Home sites have good resources for the families of those who are serving or have served.
  • SAMHSA has resources for veterans and families dealing with post-military service related drug abuse and mental health issues.
  • The VA also has a list of resources to help veterans who are facing foreclosure on their homes.
  • FinAid has a page dedicated to helping U.S. Military Veterans pay for their education.

What have I missed?  Do you have other resources you can recommend that are particularly helpful for U.S. Military Veterans and their families?
