The United States Air Force is listing among its job opportunities online persona managers, and static IP managers. If this were anyone other than the US military, this would be called "opposition research," using "proxies."
Since it IS our military, however, it's being referred to by critics as "Develop0eing False Online Personalities to Counter 'Enemy Propaganda'."
Our intelligence department would have to be crazy NOT to learn how to monitor and counter the numerous cyberwars being waged right now, and this includes going online incognito - something which our enemies and everyone else has a right to do, and many do, on a regular basis. Will there be abuses? Probably - we're talking about human beings, afterall. But we're going to have an even bigger problem if we allow the web to continue to become a lawless no-man's land, descending into anarchy, where only the meanest and most violent survive.
Let's not automatically assume the worst of our own soldiers - many of whom are the best and brightest minds in the computer industry, and handicap them from being able to do what they do best - effectively protect us.
